Unexpected social media crash

Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp all experienced a world wide crash on Monday October 4, 2021.

The cause of this event was not hacking, but system modifications on Facebook’s Border Gateway Control (BGP). BGP is responsible for delivering data across the internet after it is submitted, kind of like an online postal service. Because Facebook owns both Instagram and Whatsapp, all three went down.

With 3 billion people on Facebook, 1 billion on Instagram, and 2 billion on Whatsapp, this crash impacted a lot of people for a while too, 6 hours to be exact. Many small businesses made almost no profit that day. Many were relieved from the break of social media and others angry.

The good news is, all of the social platforms are now up and running like normal. Thankfully this striking occurrence only lasted for 6 hours. Who knows what would happen if it lasted longer?
